Why Marcoola is a Great Choice for Families

Marcoola is popular with families because the beach here is regularly patrolled and the sand and water are easy to access from San Marino by the Sea. Many guests praise the location for being quiet, close to the playground and cafes, and for having lifeguards on duty — factors that make beach days calmer and more reassuring when children are present.

Swimming Safely: Between the Flags Every Time

Always swim between the red-and-yellow flags marked by lifeguards; this area is monitored and assessed for safer conditions. Before entering the water, check with the lifeguards about current conditions, rips or strong currents, and follow their instructions. Keep younger children in the shallows and close at arm’s reach, and consider using Coast Guard–approved flotation aids for weaker swimmers rather than relying on pool inflatables.

Sun Safety for Little Ones

Queensland sun can be intense even on cloudy days. Use broad-brimmed hats, UPF swimwear, and SPF 30+ sunscreen applied 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every two hours or after swimming. Bring a pop-up shade or use beachfront shelters when available, and aim for shady activities during the peak UV period between late morning and mid-afternoon.

Supervising Balconies and Sliding Doors

Balconies and sliding-glass doors need extra attention with toddlers. One guest raised a specific concern about sliding-door handles and the need for safety stickers and child-safe latches; that’s a helpful reminder to stay vigilant. Keep balcony doors locked when children are unsupervised, position furniture so little ones can’t climb onto railings, and use an approved childproof lock or door stopper if you’re concerned. If you’d like assistance or temporary safety items during your stay, ask the managers — several guests note that the hosts are friendly and helpful and willing to assist.

Using the Playground and Pool Safely

The nearby playground is a big draw for families but still needs adult supervision at all times. For the pool, check depth markings and any posted rules before letting children in; some guests describe the pool as small, so it’s important to keep a close watch and avoid overcrowding. Always ensure children follow pool rules, don’t run on wet surfaces, and avoid glass containers around pool or beach areas.

A Simple Family Safety Checklist for Your Stay

Pack a few small items that make supervision easier: a basic first-aid kit, a couple of childproof door locks or temporary handle covers, a pop-up shade or umbrella, life jackets for non-swimmers, rash vests and hats, and plenty of water. Bringing familiar flotation aids and a waterproof bag for phones and keys can also reduce stress during beach time.

Local Help and Emergency Info

If you need local advice, the friendly hosts at San Marino by the Sea have been praised for helpfulness and can point you to the nearest medical services, playground details and the lifeguard schedule. In an emergency dial 000. For up-to-date surf and safety information check Surf Life Saving Queensland or speak directly to the lifeguards on duty when you arrive at the beach.

Customer review

The location was great, the service great, the rooms need some upgrades. The balcony door needs safety stickers, we walked into it a few times. The handle of the sliding door are very dangerous for little kids and it will jam hands if you don’t pull out fast enough.
